Adult Life

Alexander became pope in 1492 at age 62. After Pope Innocent VII had died the three likely candidates to become the next Pope were Cardnials Borgia, Ascanio Sforza and Guilian della Rovera. Since Borgia (Alexander VII) was very wealthy he had succeeded in buying a lot of the votes. He ended up being elected in on August 10.

At first many people thought that his reign showed strict justice and it wasn't like the anacry they have had before. Many people also thought that he might end up sending them to war. His son Cesare was made archbishop of Valencia and his nephew Giovanni became a cardinal. At this time Cervetri and Anguillara both had the chance to be a duke of Gandia. Alexander did not like this idea so he tried to make alliances with the king's enemies. One of the enemies were the Sforza family, lords of Milan. This did not go well with Ferdinand, who believed that it would start a war. Ferdinand hoped that Spain would be able to help in case some incident would occure but Spain wanted to be on good terms with Pope Alexander VI.

On June 14 the Duke of Gandia went missing and was found dead the next day in Tiber. His left Alexander distought and he shut himself up in the Castle Sant'Angelo. He aslo declared that a goal for his life was to reform the church.
